Tottori Prefecture is located in the Chugoku region of Japan, facing the Sea of Japan. Its capital is Tottori City. It is famous for the Tottori Sand Dunes, the largest in Japan. The prefecture is rich in nature and known for its sightseeing spots and hot springs.

Tottori Sand Dunes

The Tottori Sand Dunes are Japan’s largest sand dunes, located in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture. They stretch about 16 kilometers from east to west and about 2 kilometers from north to south. The dunes are known for their beautiful wind-shaped patterns and landscapes. Visitors can enjoy activities such as paragliding and camel rides.

 

Mizuki Shigeru Road

Mizuki Shigeru Road is a famous tourist spot located in Sakaiminato City, Tottori Prefecture. It features bronze statues of yokai (spirits and monsters) from the manga artist Shigeru Mizuki’s famous work GeGeGe no Kitaro. The street stretches about 800 meters and is lined with shops and cafés themed around yokai. It’s a popular destination with a magical atmosphere both day and night.

 

Mitokusan Sanbutsu-ji

Mitokusan Sanbutsu-ji Temple is an ancient Tendai Buddhist temple located in Misasa Town, Tottori Prefecture. It is especially famous for the Nageire-dō, a wooden hall built into a steep cliff, often called “Japan’s most dangerous national treasure.” The structure is believed to date back to the Heian period and is admired for its daring construction. The temple’s blend of nature and spirituality creates a deeply mystical atmosphere.

 

Uradome Coast

Uradome Coast is located in Iwami Town, Tottori Prefecture, and is part of the San’in Kaigan National Park. It is famous for its crystal-clear waters, dramatic cliffs, sea caves, and white sandy beaches. Visitors can explore the coast by sightseeing boat or sea kayak. Often called the “Alps of the Sea,” it offers some of Japan’s most breathtaking coastal scenery.

 

Kurayoshi

Kurayoshi City is a historic town located in the center of Tottori Prefecture. It is famous for its Shirakabe Dozo District, an area lined with traditional white-walled storehouses that preserve the atmosphere of an old merchant town. The city is also known for its hot springs, including Sekigane Onsen nearby. Its calm, nostalgic charm makes it a popular sightseeing destination.


 

Mt. Daisen

Mount Daisen, standing about 1,729 meters tall, is the highest peak in the Chugoku region of western Japan. Also known as Hōki Fuji for its resemblance to Mount Fuji, it has long been a sacred mountain in local religion. It’s a popular destination year-round for hiking, skiing, and camping. The area also features Daisen Temple and scenic farms, making it a well-loved tourist spot.
